Gradual Change
Among the first laws passed was the New York Married Woman's Property Rights Act of 1848. However, initial success subsided, despite some gains long the way, and it took 72 years of tireless campaigning to achieve female suffrage. On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, granting women's suffrage.
