The Grimké Sisters
"The earliest of women to speak in private parlors were two sisters, Angelina and Sarah Grimké...The sisters, especially Angelina, became such effective and successful speakers that they were soon in demand by anti-slavery groups outside New York...Although Angelina was the far better and more active speaker and was more widely known than her sister, it was Sarah who took the lead in defending woman's rights...They forced a recognition of the ability and the right of women to speak in public and to be accepted as human beings,"
